Stepping into History: A Journey to Palenque with Cultural Cartagena

Nestled in the heart of Colombia’s Bolívar region, just an hour’s drive from Cartagena, lies San Basilio de Palenque—a town unlike any other in the Americas. Recognized as the first free African town in the New World, Palenque stands as a powerful testament to resilience, cultural preservation, and the enduring spirit of freedom. On our latest excursion with Cultural Cartagena, we had the privilege of immersing ourselves in the vibrant traditions, rich history, and incredible hospitality of this remarkable community.

A Warm Welcome to the Land of Freedom

As soon as we arrived in Palenque, we were greeted by the rhythmic beats of traditional African drums, a sound that immediately transported us to another era. Our local guide, a proud descendant of the town’s founders, welcomed us with stories of the brave enslaved Africans who escaped Spanish rule and established Palenque in the early 1600s. Their legacy remains alive today through the town’s unique language, music, and way of life.

Exploring the Culture and Traditions

Walking through the dusty streets of Palenque, we encountered vibrant murals depicting historical figures and moments of resistance. Each corner of the town tells a story—of struggle, perseverance, and triumph. We visited a local home where we learned about the Palenquero language, a fascinating blend of Spanish and African dialects, and one of the few surviving Creole languages in Latin America.

Our experience also included a traditional dance performance, where the hypnotic rhythm of the drums and the expressive movements of the dancers captured the essence of Palenque’s African heritage. The energy was contagious, and before long, we found ourselves dancing alongside the locals, completely immersed in the moment.

A Taste of Palenque

No visit to Palenque would be complete without sampling its delicious cuisine. We were treated to a meal of sancocho, a rich and hearty stew with different types of meat, I had Tilapia made with local ingredients, alongside cocadas, sweet coconut treats that have been passed down for generations. As we ate, our hosts shared stories of their ancestors and the importance of food in maintaining their cultural identity.

Why Palenque Matters

Beyond its historical significance, Palenque remains a thriving community committed to preserving its heritage. The people here take immense pride in their roots, passing down their traditions through generations. Visiting Palenque is not just a step into history—it’s an opportunity to witness a living, breathing culture that continues to inspire and educate.
